Earl of Essex (1605)
Price range: $15.00 through $25.00
Lachrimæ or Seven Tears; this is No 12, the Earl of Essex Galliard, initially set for five parts, including lute and various violons. Thus it readily suits a string quintet. It consists of a set of seven slow pieces which the composer calls tears (“teares” in Early Modern spelling) and other cheerier pieces. Dowland points out that there are many types of tears. “The teares which Musicke weeps” can be pleasant; “neither are teares shed always in sorrow but sometime in joy and gladnesse”.
